Sheer Ambrosia Bakery
Company Description:
Sheer Ambrosia, my cherished baklava bakery, began in 2008 in the heart of my own kitchen and has since grown into a full-scale commercial operation. But before I share the journey of how a Black woman from Utah mastered the art of baklava, let’s go back to where it all started. At 16, I began working for a Greek family in rural North Carolina. I spent my high school and college years working in their restaurants and home, where I fell in love with Greek cuisine. Among all the dishes, baklava quickly became my favorite. For those who may not know, baklava is a rich pastry made from layers of phyllo dough, chopped nuts, honey, and spices.
However, my love for baking had deeper roots. My mother, an exceptional African American baker, filled my childhood with southern desserts like apple, blackberry, peach, and pecan pies and cobblers. Sundays after church were reserved for devouring her homemade creations as a family.
After my time working with the Greek family, baklava became my passion. Over the years, I refined the recipe, combining the flavors of my mother’s southern-style baking with the traditional Greek techniques I had learned. This fusion led to the creation of Sheer Ambrosia—a unique southern twist on classic baklava, something I’m proud to say I invented!
Today, Sheer Ambrosia offers 14 different flavors, starting with the classic honey walnut and expanding into varieties that honor my southern heritage and the cherished baking moments with my mother. Every piece is carefully made with 45 layers of buttery, flaky phyllo, creating a treat that brings together the warmth of home and the allure of something exotic.
Sheer Ambrosia has built a strong national following through our online store, driven by strategic marketing and multiple features on National Public Radio’s Marketplace with Kai Ryssdal. We also have a thriving wholesale business, supplying 14 local restaurants, coffee shops, a hotel and floral shop, while our homegrown retail presence continues to expand through our participation in a summer farmers market.
